Short Update

Special Thanks
Before anything else, I would like to thank http://www.designbolts.com/ for giving me permissions to use his Hand Stitch Round Social icons! At first I couldn't find Weibo icon so I requested one from him and guess what? He send me one on top of sending the complete set from 32px to 256px! D; What a nice guy, isn't he? Thank you again, ZQ!

DesignBolt is a graphic design & tech website that provides plenty of free and premium design thinggy that we can use such as Vectors, PSD, Icons, Logos, Fonts and Photoshop resources! They are all beautifully designed and I liked the set I am using because they look simple and cute, lol!

I'll try to beautify my blog more when I have the time!

Also, special thanks to Napol for the cute Hello Kitty LINE stickers he send me. They are so cute and I loved them. I even used one of the Charmmy Kitty stickers as my profile pic every where now. lol.

Warner Bros. Animation

About Warner Bros. Animation
Warner Bros. Animation is the animation division of Warner Bros. based in Burbank, California, USA. They have produced DC Comics animations, Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo series (just naming a few) and are also the successor of Warner Bros. Cartoons, the studio behind the comedy short cartoons Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies which were both popular during the golden age of American animation. Today, majority of their animated films are direct-to-video whereas their theatrical films such as The Lego Movie are released under Warner Animation Group.

Baby Looney Tunes ♥

PS. I used to adore Lola Bunny when I was a little girl, I always draw and colored her at one point!

Walt Disney Animation Studios

About Walt Disney Animation Studio
Walt Disney Animation Studio is an animation studio based in Burbank, California, USA. The studio has produced countless timeless animated feature films from its first feature film 1937's Snow White to 2013's Academy Award® winning Frozen 2013 which is the highest-grossing animated film of all time, grossing nearly USD 1.2 billion as of 18/05/2014

Walt Disney Animation Studios is also the pioneer of western animation industry since beginning of the golden age of America. Even after more than seven decades later, Walt Disney Animation Studios continues to honor its heritage through animated films that combine beautiful artistry, masterful storytelling and ground-breaking technology. Under its wings, there are at least three major studios that actively produce Disney animated films - Walt Disney Animation Studios, DisneyToon Studios and Disney Television Animation.

"You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality." - Walt Disney

"Maintaining a work-life balance is important and we've created an environment that reflects that philosophy. In short, our people make our films great, and we strive to build a culture that feeds and respects the creative spirit." - Walt Disney Animation Studios

The official mascot of The Walt Disney Company is Mickey Mouse and the most notable franchise from this studio is the Disney Princess. The original line up of Disney Princess includes Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan whereas the new additional line up are Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna and Elsa.

PS. I used to spend a lot of time watching Disney cassette tapes when I was a little girl, the most replayed one is either Snow White or The Aristocats since I still remember the scenes and doing so!

Update Sept 2015: This post is no longer up to date as I have learned more recently. That being said, there will be a new post for Chinese Animation coming up. Stay tuned.

As a child, I have watched a lot of Hong Kong TV drama and films so I am really fond of them. It is also one of my life-long goal to be involved in Chinese film industry someday. However, it is sad to say that there are not many Chinese animation that I have watched prior to writing this other than Old Master Q and Tsui Hark's Chinese Ghost Story, both from Hong Kong, as many Chinese animations are also not available outside of China. It is also possible (much more like very likely) that the ratio of film and TV production company to animation studio is 1000:1 or even 10000:1!

McDull is also popular.

So what does Chinese children watch? A friend of mine who grew up in China told me that famous one would be Monkey King and Lotus Lantern if its Chinese production. I think there are many other adaptions of Chinese classics and literature as well but no information in English online. I also believe that they have watched similar animations and cartoons like me but I can't represent them. As for me, I guess I could answer for some Overseas Chinese and I would say we watch a lot of American and Japanese animations. We can name many especially massively popular ones, easily.

One thing regarding those that I have watched in the past ... As I remembered, many of the Japanese anime(s) were in Cantonese dub. If it's not, then, they are either in Mandarin dub, English dub or pure Japanese. I have also watched South Park and Disney films in Chinese dubs before. But the main point is, I have no idea that there were not many animations from the Chinese industry although there are many Chinese dubbed ones and I believe this fact still remains the same today.

A total of 2,000 provincial and city-level television stations in China have been asked to devote a show time of 60,000 minutes to domestically produced animation and comic works, but the domestic animation and comic creators can only provide works for 20,000 minutes, leaving a gap of 40,000 minutes which are filled by foreign animated programs." - People's Daily, 2004.

Hence ... If you ask me about TV drama and films, there are many, just not animation! If I am wrong, spare me kay, I am an Overseas Chinese who just started to learn more about Chinese these recent years in her own pace. Not only that, I don't know how to use Baidu to search information then write and list comprehensively nor am capable of reading Chinese books yet. Nonetheless, I have listed some of the animated films I have watched and have plans to watch!

PS. My initial plan for this blog was writing feature films especially Chinese ones but I did not due to two utmost reasons. One, there are still plenty that I need to learn about cinematography. Two, I need to learn and understand more about my ancestry. Language and culture especially. I love accuracy but well, maybe I should write on them someday if I have the time. While many has commented that I could speak Mandarin Chinese quite well, it is not the truth lol. My friends from China especially my best friend will know how terrible my Chinese understanding is. ;(

Toei Animation

About Toei Animation
Toei Animation (東映アニメーション株式会社) is a Japanese animation studio based in Nerima, Tokyo, Japan. The studio has created and produced countless film and TV anime as well as anime adaption of manga works by many legendary and renowned manga artists and authors. Their well known works includes and does not limit to Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, Slam Dunk, Digimon, Air Gear, Pretty Cure, Sailor Moon and One Piece.

"Our aim is to be an emerging player that consistently provides dreams and hopes to children and people all around the world. With this management philosophy, and leveraging our extensive experience, we will continue to achieve new standards in quality and explore fresh projects in a bid to become a truly global animation company." President Katsuhiro Takagi, June 2012

If I am correct by any chance, Toei Animation would be the largest animated film producer in the world as they have over 230 theatrical films. I literally died of shock when I came to know that. I have been exposed to Western and Eastern animation since toddlerhood but I absolutely did not expect any studio to be capable of that feat! That amount of animated work is two times much more than Walt Disney Animation Studios, DisneyToon Studio and Disney Television Animation combined as of writing. Guinness World Records should verify and recognize this!

Guess which one is my favorite childhood anime?
Nah, don't have to guess. It's Dragon Ball!

Honestly I am happy to discover that they have produced many good ones but I wonder how much time it'll take for me to write on them and if I could actually do that as it is not going to be easy. I also have numerous other interests, pursuits and real life responsibilities ... I can't possibly indulge in watching animated films every hours I have! But I'll see what I can do. *perfectionism*

PS. Toei Animation have a good bunch of fairy tale adaption anime films as well. However, I am only listing some of the films I've watched in the past for now!

Studio Ghibli

About Studio Ghibli
Studio Ghibli (株式会社スタジオジブリ) is a Japanese animation studio based in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan. The studio has produced various anime films and nine of their films are on top 20 highest-grossing anime films with Golden Bear and Academy Award® winning Spirited Away being the highest on the list, grossing nearly USD 275 million worldwide. The second and third highest-grossing anime films are also by the same director Hayao Miyazaki, Howl's Moving Castle USD 235 million and Ponyo USD 201 million.

Studio Ghibli also have a museum called Ghibli Museum, Mitaka in Tokyo. While I can't find their work philosophy on their official website, I found some words from Hayao Miyazaki (co-founder and executive director of Studio Ghibli, Inc.) on the museum's website which I think would make a good reflection of their passion in animation and filmmaking!

This is the Kind of Museum I Want to Make!
A museum that is interesting and which relaxes the soul
A museum where much can be discovered
A museum based on a clear and consistent philosophy
A museum where those seeking enjoyment can enjoy, those seeking to ponder can ponder, and those seeking to feel can feel
A museum that makes you feel more enriched when you leave than when you entered!
.
.
.
This is what I expect the museum to be, and therefore I will find a way to do it

PS. After reading them, it made me want to visit Ghibli Museum even more! I will try to visit the museum in the (near, I hope) future myself when I have my own income!

Melodrama Pictures

About Melodrama Pictures
Correct me if I am wrong, Melodrama Pictures is the studio that produces the stop motion clay-animated film, Mary and Max (2009). Or at least, it is closely related. Very little is known about this company and I have tried to find any of their official social networks for any updates but to no avail. Fortunately, I found their official websites for some general information!

Melodrama Pictures is an independent film and television production company based in Melbourne, Australia, creating distinctive feature films, drama, documentary and animation over the last decade.

This low profile company is also the home to Adam Elliot, who has won over 100 different awards for his clayanimation works. Isn't that a remarkable feat!? Not 1 but over 100!! The founder of this company and a frequent collaborator, Melanie Coombs is also the producer of his notable works; Harvie Krumpet (2003) and Mary and Max (2009). Other than animation, she produce shorts, dramas and documentaries too. That's some Australian girl power!

PS. I wonder if they are going to release Harvie's Collection of Fakts someday and what's their upcoming animation film!? I know producing animation especially clayanimation isn't easy but I am curious and really want a Harvie book though. Otl. If anyone from Melodrama Pictures just happen to read this post... you guys are awesome! ^_^

Harvie Krumpet (2003)
(Thanks to Monster Distributes for making this available on Youtube)

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
some have greatness thrust upon them
.....and then there are others"

Harvie Krumpet (2003) which won Oscar's Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2004 is not the typical animation short you watch on TV and it has several strong messages that everyone could click. Or at least I did. Even if you won't feel any connection by watching it, I am sure you'll like it if you love comedy-drama or the art of animation! (I find this animation short so unique that I wanted to share with everyone! I do not wish to write more to spoil it but I find Harvie very impressive and I think you will too. And if you like this, you would most likely also like Mary and Max!)

Illumination Entertainment

About Illumination Entertainment
Illumination Entertainment is an animation studio in Santa Monica, California, USA. They are the studio behind the successful films Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. Their adorable creations especially the Minionese-speaking Minions has generated buzz all over the world and my cute former roommate used to singalong to their "banana song" too. I wonder if she still does. *Uh-oh*

Gru's daughters are so cuteeeee!

About Minions

PS. Apparently Minionese isn't difficult to pick up ... In Minionese language, uh-oh is a troubled expression when one realizes he/she is, in fact, going to be blown up ...
