Comments on Movie: Frankenweenie (2012)
"It ranks among Burton's most personal films, encompassing familiar themes of loneliness, isolation and an insatiable need for love and acceptance." - Al Alexander, The Patriot Ledger.

"The overall effect is great cinema, good fun, a visual feast for pie-eyed Burton fans and a terrifically warped reminder of just how freaky a PG film can be." - Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle.

"Even as the narrative becomes progressively more ghoulish and a Godzilla wannabe shows up, Frankenweenie never loses its heart." - James Berardinelli, ReelViews.

"This isn't one of Burton's best, but it has zealous energy." - Roger Ebert,

"High-concept and stylish, Frankenweenie is a playlist of films and characters from Burton's movie-loving childhood." - Linda Barnard, Toronto Star.

"This film is bittersweet in its own ways. And I like that. Though cannot be compared to Tim Burton's live action films as they are essentially different types of movie, it is just as dark, gothic and artistic as his other films; perhaps just much more personal." - Rosalyn Lim.

Frankenweenie (2012) at a glance
Frankenweenie (2012) 3D stop-motion animated feature directed by Tim Burton. It is a remake of his short film Frankenweenie (1984) and a homage to Frankenstein (1931), a film based on Mary Shelley's novel of the same name.

Frankenweenie (2012) Synopsis
When a car hits young Victor's pet dog Sparky, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbors, he has to convince them that Sparky's still the good, loyal friend he was.

Movie Review: Frankenweenie (2012)
Victor attempts to bring Sparky back to life.

Frankenweenie (2012) is a beautifully animated stop motion film homage to classic horror films with references to Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Godzilla. This animated feature though cannot be compared to Tim Burton's live action films as they are essentially different types of movie, it is just as dark, gothic and artistic as his other films; perhaps just much more personal.

Victor and his beloved Sparky.

Although completely in black and white, everything is lively. It would be extra appealing to those who love black and white films. There are certainly several scenes that are impactful even with no words expressed at all. Nostalgic as the whole film is old school, the main character Victor also resembles Tim Burton childhood; they both make their own films in their early years.

Sparky by his grave.

In Frankenweenie (2012), the relationship between the pets and their owners are admirable, the children's competitiveness in fear of losing in the science fair are funny and the science teacher has unique personality that is honorable but it deals with the lost of loved ones, the mysteries of science and the fear of something unknown to the masses in addition to conformity, loneliness and ignorance too. Therefore, this film is bittersweet in its own ways. And I like that.

Toshiaki's Shelley the turtle monster.

However, one thing I don't really like about this film is towards the end, it feels a little ridiculous. It was really awesome until everyone conjured something different up. It is not that bad but the art seems not consistent anymore. Still, I still love this film and it'd be one of my favorite animated films!

Weird girl and Mr. Whiskers.

You will find that this film have a lot of precious moments if you watch it. Victor's parents are supportive of his ventures. The pets such as Sparky, Persephone and Mr. Whiskers are so  adorable and they are truly the best companion any children could have. I find the pets' eyes looks so real, realistic. Their expressions are genuine.

Just like Tim Burton has mentioned, "Dogs are special. You leave them and go out the front door. Then you come back two minutes later and it's like they haven't seen you in three weeks... You don't get that with people, really".

In short, Frankenweenie (2012) is endearing and certainly a black and white beauty!

Happy Halloween Everyone! Have a blast!

Frankenweenie (2012) Behind the Scenes

Favorite Movie Character
The Frankenstein family spending quality time together.

My favorite characters from this film are Mrs. Frankenstein and her son, Victor Frankenstein.

Mrs. Frankenstein is the sweet and loving mother of Victor. She is very supportive of him and she is never emotional; she did not yell at Victor even if he uses her kitchen appliances without notice which may also be never returned. The woman of the house, she takes good care of her family's welfare and she also loves to read while doing house chores!

Victor Frankenstein is a loner but he has a loyal companion Sparky. At school, he is viewed as one of the smartest boys if not the smartest, as he is genuinely interested with science. At home, he likes to make short films and invents in his attic workshop. When Sparky dies in an unfortunate accident, he was so heartbroken but when he got the inspiration that he could bring back his true friend back to life, he did not hesitate to conduct that forbidden science experiment!

  59. Is that right word, Ignorant? I mean stupid, primitive, unenlightened. You do not understand science so you are afraid of it.
  60. To you, science is magic and witchcraft because you have such small minds.
  61. I cannot make your heads bigger, but your children's heads, I can take them and crack them open. This is what I try to do, to get at their brains!
