Comments on Movie: Nak (2008)
"A CGI kiddie-horror movie from the guys who made Ong Bak? Does this mean there is no story, just a lot of cool fights? Thankfully, no. Warring ghosts or not, Nak has a lot more heart in it than you would expect." - Ard Vijn, Twitch Film.

"Nak is not only enjoyable and entertaining as a film. It also depicts an old legend and introduces several figures and characters that are characteristic of the ghost and spirit stories from this part of Asia." - International Film Festival Rotterdam.

"Seriously, the world should watch this. Nak (2008) is one of the nicest supernatural fantasy films intended for children or family. With unique visuals that looks like in game animations and plenty of precious characters based on folklore, it is truly an amazing animated feature originated from the amazing Thailand." - Rosalyn Lim.

Nak (2008) at a glance
Nak (2008) is a supernatural comedy fantasy film directed by Natthaphong Ratanachoksirikul. It is produced by Sahamongkol Film International, the company behind the international hit martial arts films from Thailand such as Ong-Bak and Tom-Yum-Goong. The title character, Nak, is based on the popular Thai ghost - Mae Nak Phra Khanong.

Nak (2008) Synopsis
Nak is a ghoulishly fun, animated musical romp. Set in the present day, Nak features a collection of Thai ghost legends that have grown tired of haunting and moved to the country intent on helping all humanity. One night, at a temple fair, an audience is enjoying an outdoor movie when a ghost comes out of the screen and takes away Tee, a seven-year-old boy. The king of all ghosts plans to use Tee to fulfill his dark plan of world domination.

Nak, the most popular ghost legend in Thailand, and her very colorful friends Keaw (a headless ghost), Thong (a doggy ghost), and Eud (a tall demon) come together to help Gam, Tee's sister, get Tee back. Nak is especially moved by Gam's plight as her painful past comes to the fore and she fights for someone who was once taken from her.

Chock-full of exuberant characters, lively action, and a variety of emotional and toe-tapping songs, Nak is a film based around ghost legends that is perfect for late-elementary youth and older. The film is also a treasure trove of discovery for adults well-versed in Asian horror, as many famous specters from recent films make cameo appearances throughout the story.

Movie Review: Nak (2008)
Nak and her friends from the spirit world.

There are not many Thai animated films but seriously, the world should watch this. Nak (2008) is one of the nicest supernatural fantasy films intended for children or family. With unique visuals that looks like in game animations and plenty of precious characters based on folklore, it is truly an amazing animated feature originated from the amazing Thailand.

The spirits help Gam to find her lost brother, Tee.

From the start, the sense of tranquility can be felt but when the settings changed, it felt like as if we are instantaneously sent to the fast-paced life of Bangkok, the bustling capital city of Thailand. Everything seems to be made alive out of original pictures that are beautiful, which is truly impressive.

Characters based on folklore!

Although the impression of the film is that it is intended for children, it is still great for adults as well. Nak (2008) is in fact quite entertaining with plenty of witty jokes, lyrics and parodies in addition to the menageries of ghosts from different parts of the world!

Sadako/Phi Yipun crawling out of the screen, stunning Gam and Tee.

If you love folklore like me or if you specially like ghosts stories, you'll be pleasantly surprised and so much delighted to see the animated feature film's version of the characters based on folklore as they are super cool! For me, my favorite ones are Sadako (Onryō from The Ring), Nang Takian, Nang Tani, Shrines Ghosts (I don't know the name but they look so adorable) and of course, Mae Nak!

Nak and her baby.

PS. Nak (2008) is one of my favorite and it made me want to explore Thai culture even more!

Favorite Movie Character
Mama Nak

Nak is my favorite character in this movie. Aside from having an interesting background, she is also very kind-hearted and beautifully FUCSHIA!! It is easy to tell that she loves her friends and family but she will always do what's right for the benefit of the masses so Nak is an altruistic utilitarian inside out!!
